Architecture and Art Byzantine Churches of Mount Athos

The book sets the context for portraying the Byzantine churches of Mount Athos by first outlining a brief description of the Byzantine world, from AD 330 to 1453. Then follows comprehensive written and illustrated depictions of the architecture and art of the Byzantine churches of each of the existing twenty monasteries and four sketes which the author has visited and photographed. Each written depiction provides a history of the monastery along with the major architectural and iconographic characteristics of the monastery’s main church, known as the katholikón. Each illustrated depiction has first an aerial photograph of the monastery complex then photographs of the key architectural features of the katholikón and of the main icons and frescoes inside the church.
